In this two-volume set, Sam Watters returns to the life of his grandfather, the author, poet, and musician Bravig Imbs (1902–1944) who fled to Paris in 1923 to escape his claustrophobic Mid-West heritage and stuffy life at Dartmouth.

Between 1925 and the opening of World War II, Imbs married a Russian countess, published a ripping satire of life at his alma mater, and released Confessions of Another Young Man, his oft-quoted account of the comings and goings around Gertrude Stein and her salon, where Imbs was, for a while, Stein's maître d'.
